Spoilerific Discussion Post--Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Here we go. Same drill as always--post in here to discuss the book, once you've either finished it or don't care if you're spoiled. If you're trying to stay clean, stay out.

I get my copy in a few hours. See you later in the weekend.

Well, a worthy finish--perhaps brought down a bit by my feeling that Harry was stumbling aimlessly into his victories, as always, but that's the way his adventures have always been, so I'm not going to quibble now. It was consistent in that they usually won by taking advantage of Voldermort's mistakes and oversights.

I thought someone closer might be lost, or at least more on-screen. I certainly thought Neville was buying it at the end.

I can't decide if Harry's second AK survival is cheesy or not. It did get around the "Harry is a Horcrux" issue without killing him at the end of the series--and at least the gun was on the wall (that's the source of the famous gleam of triumph, I assume, when Dumbledore realized he might not have to sacrifice Harry completely).

A worthy finish indeed. The thing that occasionally disappointed me was Harry sometimes slipping back into book-five-ish whining and self-pity, but that didn't do a lot to dilute my enjoyment of the book. I liked it a lot, and I'm grateful (if not entirely surprised) that it did end up with even better than a "minimal happy ending": Harry marrying Ginny, and both Hermione and Ron surviving.

Ginny's actually an interesting point: I missed her in this book. In the first half, I really had the sense that she was accomplishing things and fighting the good fight and being generally cool. But she basically dropped out of the picture in the second half. Even after she re-appeared on screen at the end, it didn't seem like she did anything. Even a spot of romance would have been a start (I expected at least that much).

Well, anyway. Past time for bed.

Good book. :)

Oh, and Neville was friggin' awesome. Voldemort didn't "choose wrong" when he decided to kill Harry: he didn't have a "right" choice at all.

If you're interested, I've just posted some rather lengthy comments over on my own blog.
