Gettysburg, Manassas, or Antietam?
Smart money's on Gettysburg. Antietam was the bloodiest, and might fit the stretcher theme best. Manassas is the only one I've been to.
They've got to be coming to DC in this very special Americana race, so I'll let you know if I can do any lame location scouting once we've seen it.
Oh, and you're not going to get shot because it's a freaking game show, you lamer. Whoever provided the episode quote will be excused from my pathetic wrath if they are under 12.

Pathetic wrath excused.
A tad disapointing, but they really did go by the iconic visuals in D.C. and it's not like you can go in them. Although I might have put a clue box by the Hope Diamond or near the Spirit of St. Louis or something. You'd have had a crowd of people in the background of a TV shot though; I'm not sure of the logistics on getting releases for people in background crowds, if it's necessary or not.
I missed the beginning of the episode (we were out to dinner), so I was confused by a few things. For instance, I missed the initial introduction of the spy Roadblock. What determined whether a given briefcase-carrying person would respond properly or not? Was it like the "clue in a haystack" challenge from a couple seasons ago? (At first, I expected that every team would have a different code phrase, but I guess not.)
In general, I don't have much to say. At this point (and after watching the next episode preview), my big question is whether this is a "race around the world" or a "race around America". :) Are they just waiting to get the numbers down a little before they start springing for airplane tickets (international especially)?
Not a great episode, but I did enjoy Brock's petulant indignance about his driving escapade. "I told you that I didn't miss the turn for 83 South!" True enough, but it does kinda deflate your argument when the reason that you were right is that you failed to actually make it onto 30 East in the first place.
OTOH, it seems that, were it not for the Rogers' further navigation mistakes in DC, the Gaghans might still be lingering near the Lincoln memorial even now, steadfastly refusing to ask any locals for help. Seriously, when has it ever been a rule that you're not supposed to ask for help or directions?

The spy task was simply to repeat code phrase and wait for response. It appeared differing non-spies decided to respond in different ways, and I think they freaked out a few people who had no idea what was going on.
Mostly it was a haystack task that rewarded walking speed and perseverance more than strength and perseverance. (And incidentally, when you find your contact, you don't scream and yell. Every one of them would last 5 seconds as a spy.)
Phil also never said "race around the world." They also advertised 11,000 miles, so it's clear they're not leaving North America.
I think the Rogers' problem was that they went east on US 30 instead of West--they found 30, but Papa Rogers consulted his Bible and made a wrong turn.
I think it would take you about 30 min. to effectively make one sweep of THE Reflecting Pool. If they really spent two hours there...that's bad racing.
That was a delightfully devious clue, by the way. That should teach them that details matter...
Yeah, I gathered from reading some of the TWoP threads that the real mistake for the Rodgers was the Dad saying 30W instead of 30E. Still, given that they were in the middle of Pennsylvania, you'd think someone with a decent grasp of geography would at least question if they really wanted to go west initially if they wanted to get to DC. Or maybe it's just that I'm mapping all of the negative feelings I have for over-priveledged, shallow preppy kids onto Brock and his floppity hair. Either way, he was kind of a tool for the rest of the episode.
