The Amazing Race 7--"We Got a Gnome! We Got A Gnome"

I'd make a joke about a Travelocity cross-promotion...except it's probably not a joke.

Instead I'll link to Gnome, gnome, gnome, gnomes, and Gnomes of Zurich.

Also, I'll remind you that this week features Kelly's psychotic break with reality.

Running Diary:

--they're backtracking?

--Ron just made the TMBG joke. Sweet.

Bunchy bunchy.

Rob raises with 7-2 offsuit (re: the early flight bluff).

Monkeys in the airport?

"What I did is crashed myself...so I could get out of the Army early"

Sweet. Uchenna & Joyce plus Team Old call the bluff. Can Rob hit something on the flop?

I was sort of wondering why they were showing all the airport intrigue for a bunch, but now I know why--it was worth something.

Hubris, Rob, hubris. *break*

Wasn't this lighthouse in The World is Not Enough?

6:27 vs. 8:24. One of the pretty white teams is probably getting the Amazing Mugging.

Obviously Ron can't commit to the train.

Your clue: "Free M"

The Amazing Product Placement.

Columns. 5500 lbs = 40 Turks? Something of that magnitude anyway. I suppose it depends on your self-consciousness in approaching fat people.

Hubris, Ron, Hubris.

"Please, you're fat, get on this scale." This is a common Turkish activity?

Gotcha, Rob. *break*

Well now that Ron knows, he's back to playing strong.

Shouldn't they be pretty sure this is non-elim?

Storm the Fortress? Sweet. I would guess Ron should do great at this. I doubt the Crusaders got rope ladders though.

Meredith and Gretchen are going to piss away two hours, aren't they?

"Forte" in the sense of "skill" is pronounced like "fort." FYI.

That was a weird inclusion of a Pit stop opening into a Pit stop welcome.

Turkish greeter is cool. Uchenna and Joyce should have a huge lead to lose to bunching next episode.

Press down on their shoulders when they're on the scale...I'm surprised Gretchen and Meredith haven't forgotten their gnome yet.

I take it back. the scales might be quicker. At least it's less confusing.

Ron & Kelly? That's an old person's mistake you're making.

"That's the same combination I have on my luggage." Well, not really, but I wanted to make the joke anyway.

Gretchen climbing? Wow.

72? Bingo!

24 different combinations of numbers to try.

Was I right on the detour in the first place? Ron and Kelly just seemed to make up some ground. Then again, Rob and Amber hoofed it.

Checking my list, Meredith had done five roadblocks--I bet they were aware of that. Gretchen should have rode the camel cart last week.

Did the Oldsters make it on their own power, or did they cling on Uchenna and Joyce? I think the latter. They still really didn't outrace the two teams who didn't end up doing all they could at the airport.

"It's just like escaping from Baghdad"

They don't have the plane. They do have the monorail. monorail! monorail!

Layers, kids, layers. You know you're last. Heck, don't step on the mat--stop right there in front of Phil and do it. Also, give your cash to strangers.

Last and a prize feels kinda weak. And better accomodations. That's really lame.

Another reason to layer: you could sell the clothes once the leg starts. In fact, now that I think of it, some expensive diamond earings might be in order.

Scenes: London? looks like they're running There and Back again. To India and back is the equivalent distance. But this is kinda different.

I think I'll save my rant about not going around the world for next week. I'm frustarated, because I think it'll ruin their finally going to London. But we will see.

This was an OK leg. I felt like I didn't get to see that Much of Istanbul. This hour seemed to really fly by. Part of that is due to the fact that there was actual airport intrigue, and they didn't hit Turkey until 8:20 (CDT). Anyway, it was nice to see them hit a new place, and this wasn't a bad leg, no matter how obvious it was that this was going to be a non-elim.

I was amazed at how close together all of the teams were when leaving. I might have missed something, but it looked like they all left within half an hour of each other. Can that possibly have been right? (I had a sense that Uchenna and Joyce hadn't gained a lot of time with their fast forward, but boy, second place really was close.)

Ron's TMBG joke raised him a couple of points in my book, from "bland" to "bland, but at least listens to TMBG".

I thought that Rob's basic strategy for finding out if there was an earlier flight (and for sewing confusion) was a good move, but I can't admire him for it since his later comments made it clear that a major motive was mockery and disdain. (I can't really blame him for discounting Meredith and Gretchen even though I've felt forced to respect them at this point, but discounting Uchenna and Joyce was just plain dumb.) But boy, did it feel sweet to see his hubris be empty for once.

But the whole thing now has me wondering just how many opportunities like this the whole field has missed earlier in the race. How much of the airport clumping was the teams' own fault?

Regarding the Travelocity Roaming Gnomes(TM): it was irritating to have product placement that blatant in the show, though I'm not entirely sure why I feel that way. Maybe it's just the slippery slope worry. "Now you have to eat these four pounds of Brazillian meat, provided by Fogo de Chao (now available in a city near you!)". I hope the teams were given the opportunity to electrocute the suckers with those dangerous European electric sockets.

[Side note: both the OED and answers.com list two-syllable pronunciations of forte first, though both at least mention "fort" (but the OED tags that as "formerly").]

It felt really good to see Meredith and Gretchen beat the other two teams, whether they entirely "deserved" it or not. (Somehow, they're still here, and I can't attribute all of that to dumb luck.)

Some questions about the prize for Ron and Kelly (not the money, the in-race prize). First, they aren't going to show up at the pit stop, and everyone who's there knows that they were last. Will the other teams even know that they're still in the race? (Probably so, but it would be kinda cool if they didn't.) Second, how big of an advantage will it be to have access to Travelocity? Will Ron and Kelly be able to go back to their hotel room after they get their clue and book flights? That might be nothing, but it has the potential to be huge (as this leg showed). Third, given that a four star hotel is full of rich people and features nice things like top flight concierge service, how much effect will the Amazing Mugging have at all?

After the preview this week, I was a little disappointed with the confrontation between Ron & Kelly. Still, I think it did highlight the difference between the two basic reactions to international travel. For some people, it's an eye-opening experience where you realize that some things you held as universal really aren't. For others, it's just a bunch of stuff that happened. After watching that scene, all I can say is, "Free Ron!"
