The formal job offer has finally come through. Officially, I'll be a self-employed person who sorta happens to work at the U.S. Naval Research Lab. Once I get the paperwork turned around, which might wait until the long weekend as I get my head wrapped around the paperwork I need to do here in Chicago. Maybe I can get a thesis date soon. Maybe I can also get a real date soon. One thing at a time.
Steve
P.S. My grandmother is doing much better already than when I first got home, which apparently was already much better than the few days before I got home. I'm sure my good mood will be cut by something tomorrow, but for tonight it's great.

Yay for Steve being in a good mood! ;-)
Good luck, dude. Hope the job works out well.
Kudos on your new job. Can't wait to see you here on the east cost. Might want to wait to move until after the huricane season here is over. Richmond VA was underwater earlier this week.
Also, if you will be self employed you might want to check out the laws about taxes and 1099s (self employment tax form). I was self employed in MI and got screwed on my taxes because I wasn't clear on the law. If you are 1099, you have to pay your part and the employer's part of social security, medicare and so on. I ended up owing a lot of tax $$. You need to plan to set aside some amount monthly so you are ready for it.

Yeah, the info packet warned me about that. I figured on setting aside 1/3-1/2 of the checks until I was sure wtf was going on.
What will you do for insurance? Will they provide that or do you need to find your own.
Don
I will have insurance through the ASEE. It's not clear how well it will cover my insulin pump supplies, but if it failed to cover them at all the net effect would be paying like a normal postdoc instead of paying like a great one. So I'm not going to sweat it.
